The History of Apple Pie @ The Macbeth

Last night The History of Apple Pie tore up The Macbeth in a large way. The lead singer Stephanie Min is incredibly smiley and bouncy on stage, with a mass of blond hair and an interesting choice of footwear (I think she was wearing the same version of Kickers that I wore in Year 10.)

They're from London, there's 5 of them (3 of whom are on guitars) and last night they sounded fuzzy, sweet and punchy and looked like they were having a jolly good time. On support were The Chapter 24 who were amazingly screamy and tight.

I took these pictures on my camera which no longer has a view finder, so I took these blind. That's why they are a bit shoddy, doesn't do them justice at all. So get down to see them asap if you know whats good for you.

Shake It Out - Florence & The Machine

I absolutely can't wait to hear her forth coming album 'Ceremonials' - I don't think I've anticipated an album like this in a long time. I had her last album Lungs on constant rotation for about four months! Don't know how she's going to top it.

Here's 'Shake It Out' from the album, lots of crushing lows and dizzy highs in this -and even without her fringe, she's still my favourite forest-goddess.

'Ceremonials' is out 31st October.

NYC Dreaming

I love an Indie band, I really do. I enjoy a jangly guitar, some wobbly vocals and a front man with floppy hair. I've even been known to have been wooed by synth.

However, after a two week dive into the throbbing mess that is New York City I am quite hopelessly back in love with Hip Hop. It has to be said that the voices of Biggie and Jay Z sound so much better whilst watching yellow taxis and the Manhattan skyline.

And even though my heart is with Rock & Roll, you can't beat shocking out to a moody Hip Hop beat in a place where no one is afraid to dance. YES - even the boys dance in New York.

So for now, with my body in London but my mind in NYC you'll find me jumping around my room to this...

Fairytale Lullaby - Bombay Bicycle Club

So today has been a bit of a meepy day, (meepy means mopey, just a bit worse) my wisdom teeth have been giving me some hardcore jip and lets just say I felt out of sorts over my bacon sandwich this morning. That was until I whisked myself off on a bonny bike ride to Victoria Park. Picture the scene; The sun was shining, there was blue sky, people were picnicking surrounded by bunting and pork based products, the wind was in my hair and the most wonderful music drifted into my lug holes. It was the tinkly sound of Fairytale Lullaby by Bombay Bicycle Club.

So if you're feeling a bit drab, and something’s got one over on you - give this a spin and you'll be transported to a thick woodland, teeming with pixies and a large array of flora. Thanks Bombay, thanks very much. You pretty much saved my day.

On a balmy Easter Sunday I was incredibly hungover, and had done a 5 hour DJ marathon set the night before. Feeling in a hazy daze and after eating a dozen BBQ'd burgers I weighed it up. Do I go to see the Alpines gig at Shoreditch Studios? Or do I give it a miss, go to sleep and wake up in regret? I chose the former, and THANK HEAVENS I did because they were ridiculous.

The singer has this amazing long dark shiny hair and it looks so dramatic teamed with her strong and haunting vocals. They've got some immense songs up their sleeves. It's all kind of electro tinged, arty and dark pop (if you have to put it in a box) but it's dead cool, and euphoric in places. It brings you right down and then seizes you straight back up again, and it was the perfect hangover cure.

They're from South London and there's two of them - Catherine the singer with the amazing hair, and Bob on keyboards. They really are one of my favourite new bands and their originality and raw thudding beastliness is a refreshing sip.

Crystal Fighters @ Heaven

Crystal Fighters aren't a new band. They've been loitering around for a while, sporadically dropping musical offerings like a pigeon with a funny tummy. But - they've JUST released their first album 'Star of Love' and if you like surprises, this one's for you. It tinkles along, summoning up fairy gatherings in the woods and dappled shade, and from out of nowhere a beastly dubby bit of bass will catch you right between the eyes.

Their show at Heaven was heaving, sweaty and very magical indeed. Some people aren't fond of the faux Spanish ad libbing inbetween songs (when I told my friend they aren't ACTUALLY Spanish she looked at me in awe) but they win you over by creating rather a party indeed.

With traditional Basque instruments they fuse folk and storytelling with grubby bass lines, and thunderous rave music. It really is quite a delight.

NOT SQUARES ARE LOUD, they are ridiculously tight and such lovely people. They run on chips and cheese whilst on tour (apparantly its food of the gods) They are from Belfast (if my memory is correct) and seem to have a rather loyal crowd. They played KOKO in Camden last Friday and the place was packed, seriously.

Elephants + Dimbleby & Capper

Hoxton Bar & Kitchen was home to a rumpus last week.

Elephants were a smidge like Beach House, just a girlier version. Really chilled out electro with heavenly vocals.

Dimbleby & Capper were off the chain in a humungous way, all big pink candy floss hair, weird masks, skitzo dancers and thumping bass heavy drums. I loved it, a lot.

Pete and the Epiphany

This blog is mostly about music, because music is the closest thing to magic. But occasionally it also houses my meanderings, wistful thoughts, and of course my adventures.

Today it's for the latter. It's easy to get into habits as a human being, and sometimes they are not for the best. As your life becomes smaller and smaller it can seem like ones options are limited.

This morning, over a delectable brunch at our favourite East End eatery - me and my petal decided. You have to think outside the box you've put yourself in, I am inspired and I am never looking back. I am off to explore, revel with rogues, wink at fairies, do what i feel. Liberation.

On another note, Peter Doherty played a one-off gig at The Macbeth last night. He's lovely. He sang perfectly, strummed impeccably, sweated dutifully and we danced vivaciously.

Vince Kidd @ The Boogaloo

Vince Kidd has the best voice I've heard in a very long time. It is rich, gravelly and realllly powerful. In fact - It's so pleasing to the ear that I could easily give up carbohydrates for a week if it meant I could have his voice for dinner every night. Literally - it's that good.

Last week I went to watch him at The Boogaloo in Archway, and I'm pleased to say his voice is just as thick in real life as it is on record. He's got this amazing American 1950's thing going on - but with a punky twist. Maybe if you mixed Elvis with Sid Vicious (If that were humanly possible) you might get Vince Kidd.

Not Squares @ Monto Water Rats

I've always been told that Not Squares are stonking on stage. Their album 'Yeah Ok' is a very raw, punky mish mash of haunting yelps and twisted electro, so it'd only do to have a cracking live show to go with it.

When I say raucous, I mean it. And Not Squares were just that - it was loud, intense and invigorating. I caught them before their show and you can hear the interview here...

Lyle and Scott - creators of all manor of preppy garments are curating a load of nights down at XOYO with some of the most exciting emerging bands around. I rocked along to see Babeshadow, Trophy Wife and the rather unassuming James Yuill the other week.

Babeshadow were first, looking dashing as ever and too fucking cool. They played some new material which I'd been gagging for because I've very much worn out their EP - it's in tatters! Is it time for an album from them?? We'll see.

James Yuill was a pleasant surprise as he boshed out some tingly electro. He's a one man band - and for one guy he made quite a noise.

Mark Ronson took to the decks for YoYo at Notting Hill Arts Club the other week - his hair is still blonde and his voice is still peculiar. If you haven't been to NHAC before, it feels like your nan's living room that's been taken over by squatters and perhaps had a flood or two. It's dark, dank but rather fun and there are a handful of crevices to nestle into in between bands. However, beware of the door staff, they may bight.

Midnight Boom @ Bacchus Late Bar

Last night I played my first ever DJ set at Midnight Boom. It was AWESOME, and I have now got the bug for it. I bashed out The Libertines, Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, The Cure and David Bowie - oh and Fleetwood Mac which went down a storm. So glad I didn't get egged for being a novice. It got pretty messy, people raved and there were numerous glitter spills. Feeling a little fragile today mind, might lay off the vodka for a while!

Crystal Castles @ The Roundhouse

Here are the long awaited pictures from Crystal Castles @ The Roundhouse from last month. As you can see it was a pretty atmospheric night. They were everything I expected them to be; dark, raucous, bizarre, rough and mental. But they were impeccably good, and hearing the music live confirmed my love for their thrashing noise - it sounds more melodic live and yes Alice Glass has one hearty set of lungs. Please go see them if you can!

MGMT @ Brixton Academy

In my humble opinion they've produced some of the most inspiring and forward-thinking music of the past few years, they've maintained an element of mystery regardless of mainstream success and they seem like genuine chaps. Those are three reasons I love MGMT. There are many more but I shall not bore you with them.

What I'm trying to say is that MGMT played rather a good show at Brixton academy last week and here are some piccys.

The crowd unfortunately were a load of bores. No one danced and no-one liked glitter, furthermore - no on liked it when they played songs off their latest album Congratulations. Which is silly because even though it's been widely poopoo'd, I think it's excellent.

This was my view throughout the show which was pretty funny. But thanks to my camera's zoom and a little initiative I managed to get these shots.....

Best Coast. The main girl was like soooooooo L.A! She even said 'I'm gunna be pissed off if you don't dance to this one because you should know it by now' and talked a lot about how much she loved her cat. But the show was INCREDIBLE. They sounded so big and clear and her voice was stronger than a unicorn horn. I love their song Boyfriend.

Sky Larkin These were awesome too. The girl had a lot of rythym and I bopped along with her. Their album is out now, so you can bop too.

1234 Festival @ Shoreditch Park

A tiny park surrounded by concrete blocks deep in the throbbing veins of Shoreditch hosted a party with music from the underground last week.

There was eye liner, big hair, lots of black attire and a tonne of the grubbiest bands in the world. Me and my fellow reveller Rosa hopped and skipped about to unearth new bands, chat to fat old bald guys and throw glitter on unsuspecting passers by.

There were rather a few after parties too so we bombarded a couple, (including the kitchen of Rivington Bar and Grill) and ended up in Electricity Showrooms. Which unfortunately was pants. Anyhow the festival was a good egg and I'm definitely warmed up for Field Day on Sataurday. BRING IT!

Field Day is Approaching

It's almost time for this! Where Victoria Park transforms into a busy paradise full of cutting edge bands and young folk monkeying around.

Last year it poured with rain but no one really cared. Santigold, Aeroplane and Erol Alkan were our highlights, and this year will see Phoenix, Babeshadow, Fake Blood and Factory Floor among hundreds of other hotties.

It all happens on 31st July. Nearest tube Bethnal Grizzle.

The Cheek + Chapel Club + The Courteeners @ iTunes Festival

The Cheek.
They were dark and the lead singer was raspy. I thought he owned the vibe of an old and withered singer but the look of a young tear-away at the same time.

This chap kept looking wistfully into the audience. His Mum had won tickets for his show that night which he thought was quite nice - I bet he was looking for her.

The Courteeners
They got a massive reception, clearly everyone was there for them. Apart from the lady behind me who I think must have won tickets by accident as she looked positively bewildered at the whole experience.

You might have seen previous posts about these chaps on this blog before, or heard them on Filthy Disco. But if you haven't, DearJoseph are two sets of brothers. Emmanuel and Alexi, Guy and Piran. They’re originally from Dorset (home of scones and fishermen according to Alexi) and are now based in London where they make a dark and twisting noise. They met up with me to converse and here's what went down.

Sarah: How would you describe your sound? You’re quite Melancholy aren’t you?

Emmanuel: We play Rock N Roll music that’s quite dark, it’s quite expansive but it’s got a fragile heart.

Sarah: So who have you been influenced by growing up?

Alexi: There’s a lot of old soul records we used to listen to at home when we were growing up, a lot of 1950’s kind of dance hall stuff, soul records, Motown.

Emanuel: Where we come from Piran was well known for being a DJ, so he comes from a dance background

Sarah: Yeah I saw you DJ the other night at Bar 23 in Dalston, you pretty much packed the place out it was a bit of a zoo in there!

Emmanuel: Yeah it’s a really cool bar, it’s not too big but it’s got a really good atmosphere. It’s Alexi’s local and when he moved to London a few years back he started drinking in there, got to know the people and one thing led to another and before we knew it we were playing some records.

Sarah: I’ve been looking at your Myspace quite a lot, stalking you a little bit! It’s quite minimal I notice, very dark and there’s not actually any pictures of you guys on there. Is there any reason for that?

Emmanuel: Well I suppose there is a reason, we wanted it to be a bit more mysterious than the average. I know it sounds stupid but basically we feel that bands and music today are very disposable and people can just consume it and throw it away and we don’t want our band to be like that we want our band to be interesting.

Alexi: So people will make a bit more effort to actually find out more about the band rather than all the information being there straight away when you look - like a cheap magazine.

Sarah: I’ve seen quite a few funny old videos on your page, there’s one with some subliminal messaging going on. Who shot those?

Emmanuel: Alexi made that

Alexi: That’s in the middle of nowhere in France. Our parents are French so we’ve got a house in the middle of nowhere. There’s lots of strange buildings that have been there for years, we don’t even know what’s going on there and we just did a bit of filming to try and get a sense of the atmosphere.

Sarah: Have you been gigging anywhere recently?

Alexi: We’ve been doing a few at parties and stuff like that rather than the circuit where there are ten bands on the bill and it’s all a bit lifeless. We want to try and set something up where it’s a bit more specific to what we want to do, and make a bit more effort to do something a bit more memorable.

Emmanuel: Yeah that’s where the films came from as well. We wanted to do stuff that was a visual aspect to the music. So when we do gigs we want to show our films as well. So it’s not like going to the Hope & Anchor and watching some band for 25 minutes and not knowing what’s going on. We want to have a night that’s more interesting. That’s why we’re playing warehouses and parties.

Sarah: So what are you listening to at the moment, if I was to flick through your iPod what would I find?

Emmanuel: Well you’d have to flick through my CD player because I don’t have an iPod, but I really like Archie Bronson’s new stuff

The Drums + Scissor Sisters @ Roundhouse, Camden

Fresh faced New Yorkers The Drums kicked off the iTunes Festival last night supporting Scissor Sisters at the magnificent Roundhouse. I've been gagging to see The Drums for a hot minute so I'm chuffed to cross them off the wishlist.

The main chap Jonathan clearly had ants in his pants as he was incredibly enthusiastic with his body movements, roving and winding all over the place on stage. Ana Matronic appeared unannounced to sing a few lines which went down smashingly.

The Scissor Sisters were big, loud and tight as expected. They previewed loads of their new album 'Night Work' which I need to give a good listen to because I wasn't instantly hooked to many of the tracks. They encored with Comfortably Numb and Filthy Gorgeous which I'd been waiting for all night.

They looked amazing and were full of beans. I'd love to know what they eat for breakfast!

Isle of Wight Festival 2010

If you ask me the line-up for Isle of Wight this year was pretty much unbeatable. Jay Z, The Strokes, Blondie, Paul McCartney, Vampire Weekend, Florence + The Machine. The only thing it was lacking was the presence of really exciting new bands - but I wasn't expecting much on that front cosidering the festival was sponsored by The Mirror and ITV.

When The Strokes entered the stage on Saturday night I almost died they were so good. They gave a loud, thrashy, energetic, 'better than the record' performance. I danced until the last chord and then again all the way back to the tent. I didn't sleep much that night. I was too happy that I'd just witnessed one of the greatest moments in rock history.

Other highlights were Blondie (who apparantly was wearing a wig but I didnt notice at the time,) Vampire Weekend in the late afternoon sun, Paul McCartney singing Live and Let Die as dark clouds gathered above and setting up our tent in the rain.

I heart festival season, give me MORE!

Sarah Palmer @ Death Disco

Last week a good friend of the show - Sarah Palmer played a very loud set at the Death Disco at the Notting Hill Arts Club. She was her usual dramatic self, rocking back and forth as she belted her heart out. 'Sweet Sweet' and 'All I Ever Wanted' were the two punchiest in my eyes. She played the legendary club night Smash and Grab recently too and I'll keep you posted on all her future happenings. I've got a sneaking suspicion she'll be back with some more big dirty shows.

Babeshadow EP Launch

These jingly jangly chaps rocked out last Wednesday for the launch of their EP - Sea Serpents. It all went down at The Macbeth in a dark corner of Shoreditch to a crowd busting out at the seams. It definitely could have done with a bit more floor space and perhaps a few air vents but that's rock 'n' roll for you.

The title track 'Sea Serpents' is an infectious little number and went down a treat - as did 'For Me' and the beautiful 'Heart.'

Tom and David front the band and there's something about them that just works, I particularly like Tom's hair and his marvellous taste in jackets.

With a 6music session in the bag, the same management as Florence and a delightfully infectious sound it looks like they're onto a winner.

Bugged Out! landed at the Coronet for a Bank Holiday rave at The Coronet on Saturday. Inside the atmosphere was electrifying, and the music truly scrumptios. With Tiga, Boys Noize and Erol Alkan for company it went down stompingly. We danced forever and landed home on the back of a newspaper van complete with salt beef bagels.

Afterwards Cassius threw out a boat load of electro phatties and it was all rather pleasing.

Summer Camp @ the Lexington

Mystery is seductive. Summer Camp know this, and so did the masses of revellers at The Lexington last balmy night. For months they’ve had us gagging to see who they are, where they come from and what they look like. All we’ve had are their sublime offerings of surfer jingly pop with those brilliant film extracts at the beginning.

The secrecy apparently started as an accident, they thought they’d keep it up until we all got bored. We didn’t get bored but at some point they’d have to start doing official gigs – and last night was their first.

So now that all is revealed, here are the facts...

They are: Jeremy Warmsley and Elizabeth Sankey from London

She has: Brown hair, a fringe, really cool taste in dresses (a black number with little gold balls all over it) a cracking, clear and powerful soothing voice with a hint of Debbie Harry to it.

He: Could have been any number of about four men on the stage – but if it’s the one I’m thinking of he had square glasses and good hair.

They are not: Swedish 7 year olds or from Chicago

Babeshadow played on support too - what an utter bonus! Lead singer Tom (the one with the hair) pulled another tremendous jacket out the bag for this show. This time it was silver, and quite possibly plastic. I've fallen in love with their song Sea Serpents. I think these chaps are set to do big things, with a voice as special as this and quirky little hooks as good as these the possibilities are endless.

This can be for any number of reasons - I could be feeling particularly hormonal that day, the lyrics might resonate with something I'm going through, or it's just a down right filthy song that catches me off guard and sweeps me away to an undiscovered land.

MGMT's New Song

My heart raced and my disco strings twanged when I heard MGMT were releasing new music. I've been waiting two solid years for this, and I'm still reeling from their unreal performance at Bestival last balmy summer. When I heard the latest offering however I was a little - if not A GREAT DEAL - underwhelmed. It's not that it's a terrible song, in fact - if they hadn't had so many incredible songs out previous to this it'd be perfectly fine.

The thing is, MGMT have always made me feel FREE, they provided the sound of summer hideaways in the woods and escapes with friends, glorious days spent talking rubbish in the park and having BBQ's at London Fields. Speaking to strangers and making new friends, looking at the sky and feeling happy to be young.

Their 2008 album 'Oracular Spectacular' provided the soundtrack to my very early 20's and I know I'm not the only one. I think what I'm trying to say is that their new one entitled 'Flash Delirium' just doesn't match up. I don't like to be rash, or make any harsh critical judgements - and normally I'm pretty open minded to change. I also know that bands HAVE to evolve. It's just that I'm not feeling the magic with this one.

They'll be playing Heaven in London soon anyhow, and I still want to go because I'm curious about what they've got up their neon sleeves. I'm also still a MASSIVE fan (don't get me wrong) I'm just a little surprised.

Yeasayer - Odd Blood

The very thing that gave Yeasayer the ultimate cool factor was that they weren’t ever trying to be cool. With bad clothes and even worse waist long hair Chris Keating, Ira Wolf Tuton and Anand Wilder were doing everything in their power to be the un-coolest things around. They failed though and are currently the hippest things going, and being friends with MGMT hasn’t dented their image in the slightest.

Odd Blood is the follow up to their 2007 album All Hour Cymbals and this time it’s more of an electro pop journey than the jangly folk inspired woodland walk of the last album. Odd Blood is an erratic romp through a mysterious world of shaky vocals and big tribal drums, the harmonies are in full force and the hooks are killer.

The haunting and psychedelic echoes of Madder Red allow the album an uplifting and epic beginning whilst the sure fire pop singles Ambling Alp and O.N.E are up there with Passion Pits catchy-yet-quirky bangers. Although wishy washy and limp moments come in the form of the opener The Children and the closing track Grizelda which both epically fall flat on their faces and are unfortunately placed and obvious fillers.

Shame really, because everything in between is impressive, in an un-cool kind of way of course.

French Horn Rebellion @ Barfly

Last week two brothers from Milwaukee landed on the Camden Barfly stage to lead a musical voyage. Armed with a French Horn, some Apple Macs, a couple of keyboards and a drummer they romped through a tight and punchy set of weird and wonderful electro and closed with Beaches and friends which is the most exciting track I've heard since Filthy Dukes brought out Tupac Robot.

Since their EP dropped they've had Nick Grimshaw and friends at Radio 1 foaming at the mouth (in a good way.) Now based in Brooklyn they're causing a real stir and NME, 6 Music and The Guardian to name a few are all talking about them. It was a unique experience to watch them writhe about on stage full of energy, David scaled the speakers and there was even a shoot out involving the drummer and a toy gun.

They've just finished their mini European tour and an album is set for release this year. From where I'm standing it looks like these guys are going to give music land a much needed adventure.

Sarah Leanne Palmer + Death Disco

I've spoken to her before on The Get Up and played some of her music - Sarah Leanne Palmer played at Monto Water Rats in Kings Cross last Wednesday. Her performances keep getting bigger and better, and so do the crowds. She'll be playing Smash and Grab soon as well as Death Disco. Speaking of Death Disco.......

I went for the first time last week! Every Wednesday evening at the Arts Club in the heady heights of Notting Hill, a disco goes by the name of Death. Contrary to its title, its not deadly or sinister at all. Rather a happy bunch congregate to lap up all things indie and fun. We got there just as the live bands were finishing, but were welcomed into the basement by the joyful sound of Ellie Goulding, Yeasayer and even a dash of Jay Z - spun lovingly by the friendly creature behind the decks. It was free too - which is always a bonus.

I'm off to see these fellas below on Tuesday so stay tuned for more tit bits!

Underground Rebel Bingo Club

No old people, no boring people, no office parties, no wankers....

Those are some of the rules that exist at the Underground Rebel Bingo Club. A place where the young and beautiful come together to play bingo and be wonderfully defiant.

It all began in a church hall basement. A drunken party that got out of hand and ended in secret bingo fuelled chaos. After being rumbled by the church warden they had to up sticks, so the underground operation has moved to secret hideaways all over the place.

This month it was held at Scala in Kings Cross. A bit of a dive if I'm honest, but it successfully housed the teaming masses for this extravaganza. It shook with the welcome sound of the electro, dub - step and some of the the hottest remixes of late (Jakwob's remix of Ellie Goulding's new one is a prime example.)

I couldn't believe how packed it was, I was expecting a dark and dusty back room of Scala - not the whole chuffin' place! But sure enough it was busting at the seams with avid players. Disguised as a European Summit, people were turned out in all manor of Europe-esque themes including mime artists, clowns (eh?) and there were a whole lot of beret's.

As the countdown began, the buzz of anticipation filled the vast and now sweaty room. With all eyes fixed on the stage, three 'European Union Officials' appeared to order that all the doors were locked and the windows bolted. Then in a flash they whipped off their costumes and were revealed to be two scantily clad girls and one cheesy presenter - not for a European Union Conference but for a dirty, dark and underground game of Bingo. The crowd went mental.

Huge toy panda bears were won, sexual innuendo's were said and a ridiculous night was had by all.

Ironically Underground Rebel Bingo Club seems to be no longer underground or in fact a secret. But it's concept is exciting, it's story is legendary and it's a shit hot party.

Pete Picked Me Up

Today I sat on the tube on my way back from a trip to the V&A museum for a spot of inspiration. I was listening to my ipod and feeling a little underwhelmed by the sticky and over crowded tube train so I desperately searched for a piece of music to pick me up.

I'm sure I'm not the only one in the world - but music has the ability to completely transform my state of mind, to offer an unparalleled sense of well being and the notion that any thing's possible.

The Libertines track What a Waster came on, and although the title doesn't give way to an image of triumph - the melody and sound of Pete's voice does. If you haven't heard any of The Libertines albums, I recommend putting the public image and scandal aside and giving it a whirl. I'd happily wake up to this song every morning.

Theophilus London played a short but very sweet gig at Fabric Live on Friday evening, it was a sight to behold and I would show you on this blog if I hadn't had my camera stolen. Either that or I lost it down one of the many nooks and crannies of Fabric. So there's a mix of emotions going on here, blissful satisfaction of a wonderful show, and the sheer empty sadness of losing my battered and beloved camera. Theo had some bizarre shoes on, they were brown flats and were quite possibly women's - but he pulled it off.

A-Trak was on too - he's been Kanye West's DJ and knows how to rock a club. Me and my best friend Rosa got lost in a cavern of big base and heavy drums for a good few hours.

Currently 'Daisy Dares You' is playing on the radio, I don't like it - absolutely no need for it at all.

Shy Child and Shots

Last week my gig radar was a little off colour, I start feeling a bit odd when I haven't watched a live band for a while. So I decided it was time to switch up my game and get the hell out there.

On my quest to find a gig for under a fiver I stumbled on a night at Madame Jojo's (famed for its drag queen clientele) called White Heat. Gracing the stage that night were to be Shy Child. They're another achingly cool band to pop out of Brooklyn, they've had an album out before and have been around a while but they've only just come into my line of vision (I don't know...can't get the staff.) Anyway, they're signed to Wall of Sound and their new album comes out in March.

Their new song 'Disconnected' is a bouncy little cherub of a tune and I thought I'd better go and check them out. So I did, and it was just £5 - what an utter barg.

Apart from there being a peculiarly drab atmosphere with funksters lacking much humour, the band were immense. They played incredibly tight, fun, ecstatic disco and they were having a whale of a time. The girl on the tambourine was the best - properly going for it.

Flo is Number One! Her album Lungs has finally reached the top after many many weeks on the Chart, It came out in the Summer for goodness sake! She's chuffed. I love Lungs, it makes me feel fine that I'm a woodland creature at heart and would happily live in a tree house with the fairies if given the option. It truly is music for the senses and she whips you up, then sends you tumbling down with the sound of her bellowing vocals and all that drumming. A real rip-roarer if ever there was one.

Ode to the burger. I love burgers, they are my not-so-guilty pleasure. Soft, warm, luscious, full of different textures, an absolute party in my mouth. So when me and my flatmate decided (finally) to get a 'real persons' land line put in, there was nothing for it. It had to be the burger. So there you have it (as modelled by the lovely Rosa.) Serious conversations will not do on this though, so no-one is allowed to ring it with disasterous news.

I flippin' love the above place. The Commercial Tavern near Brick Lane. It's a real cave of wonder, with odd and flamboyant decor which looks like it could be the work of your Great Aunt on Acid. There's a Wild Boar's head mounted above the bar, a funny collection of plates in a clump stuck onto the wall, huuuuge beautiful windows and some rustic old cabinets. I went yesterday for wine and good conversation with Rosa, we looked out of the vast windows onto the street below and thought, these are the days.

Every Thursday a wonderfully eclectic party takes place at the Notting Hill Arts Club called YoYo. It's run by DJ whizz kids Seb Chew and Leo Greenslade.

The wonderful thing about this particular party is that each week is very different. Sometimes full of Hip Hoppers, other times Indie Kids and there's always a different vibe. There have been occasions when I've enjoyed it immensely and other times not so much - you just don't know what you're going to get!

Last night though must be one of my favourite editions. I went to review the Canadian band Dragonette for my radio show. I'm ashamed to admit that I hadn't heard of Dragonette before this - even though they released an album in 2007 on Mercury Records. (I must have been under a rock or in the jungle for this!)

Anyway, I found the lead singer Martina Sorbara captivating. She has this quirky confidence on stage and her voice has a sort of Karen O/Uffie quality (not that I'm comparing her to them of course.) I loved her hair too, and she was wearing these great high waist jeans. My favourite songs were Pick Up The Phone and Fixin' A Thrill which is the title of their latest album.

I love finding bands like this, makes you remember why you love music.

There was also a very peculiar severed arm hanging from the ceiling. Must have been left over from Halloween. Hope so anyway, or that's just wrong.

After the show Seb Chew and his crew cracked out some filthy music, lots of Dubby Bassy stuff and me and my good friend Sarah Palmer couldn't contain ourselves. As you can tell by these pictures.

My Cactus Deceived Me

Yesterday I found out that my beloved cacti has been lying to me. I am well aware that this specimin is pretty bad taste (i believe cacti went out with spider plants and tape players) but this is the whole point. To own something hilariously ugly so people can smile everytime they use my bathroom.

Anyway, my flatmate noticed a drop of glue on one of its spikes and it lead her to question the integrity of this inhospitable plant. With further inspection it turns out that these pink flowers are from a cheap packet of pot pourri and not formed by the plant. I believe Pot Pourri is also a no no when it comes to one's home decor. I feel saddened by this revelation.

Babyshambles @ Proud, Camden

Two Thursdays ago I pondered over to one of my favourite venues in Camden called Proud. It was for a Babyshambles gig, whom I love.

After all of the very public incidents involving Pete Doherty and drugs, the stories of his unreliability and interviews with his shy and softly spoken mutterings I really wasn't expecting a strong performance. I thought perhaps they might not show up or be really late.

The reality was on the contrary. They were pretty much on time, the band was tight and Pete's voice wonderfully strong. The crowd were a cool and sweaty bunch, pushing and shoving to the glorious sound of 'Killamangiro.' I still have the bruises from a very large person trampling my leg.

I bit through the pain though, and the show confirmed my love for Babyshambles. They really are just brilliant. Long live the Shambles.

Where The Wild Things Are

I think you'll agree that this book is one of the greatest childrens books ever. Its just wonderful. A magical tale about a naughty little boy called Max who gets sent to his room and travels to a distant land in his imagination and finds these amazing wild beasts. Just great.

My Mum and Dad brought me up on this book (that and tuna and rice) and being a cheeky little beast myself as a child, I identified with the monsters in the book. The best phrase was also born here 'Let The Wild Rumpus Start' Isn't Rumpus a great word??

It's been made into a film - which is mildly sad because you can't escape or match the magic found in the book but I'm still looking forward to see what it's like. It's out this Winter, I think November.

Sarah Palmer @ The Legion

It was the first night of her residency at this cosy little spot on Old Street. It's been a bit of a fave for me recently what with Ou Est Le Swimming Pool performing there last week for there single launch.

Sarah, dressed in tight black clobber and with long dark red hair makes a massive impact before she opens her mouth, but when she does it's quite hard to fathom where that huge voice comes from. Such a belting voice at that!

'Be Somebody Else' is a firm favourite of mine, its honest and straight-to-the-point lyrics always striking a chord with me, "But you can't get there unless you fucked the boss babe." Brilliant!

She rocked out to the core and she'll be there every first Thursday of the month, can't wait till the next one.

Ou Est Le Swimming Pool @ The Legion

I'm aware that there aren't many pictures of Ou Est here, largely because it was so flippin' packed to the sweaty rafters by the time they came on that I couldn't get close enough. So thought you might like these pics of the magnificent and very stompy Mpho who kicked the gig off to a spiffing start.

It was of course the Single Launch for Ou Est Le Swimming Pool at The Legion on Old Street, London. They are a crackin' band, lots of energy and synth's going on. Also a lovely moustache sported by the small one. Great stuff!

Bestival 2009 was a heady, magical and awe - inspiring event on the slightly odd island that is the Isle Of White. 30,000 people descended on a musical pilgrimage to bask in the presence of Florence & The Machine, Erol Alken, Annie Mac, Lily Allen, Fake Blood, Little Boots, Passion Pit, Friendly Fires and the massive MGMT.

The best performances by far were Florence, Lily and Mercury Music Prize clutching Speech Debelle.

Mercury Music Prize

OOoohhh who's it gonna be?? The Mercurys are always exciting but this year it seems even more nail biting.

I think it's because over the past year my ears have been glued to the musical utterings of Florence, Speech Debelle, Bat For Lashes and Friendly Fires. And tonight they're all going head to head.

I just wish I could be there, I HATE missing out on things like this!! I don't even have a TV so looks like I'll be tuning in to the trusty wireless to hear the performances.

Anyway - I'm just putting this photo out there. Think it'd be wonderful if she was clutching the prize at the end of the night. Have championed 'The Key' on The Get Up a few times, and think she's a lovely addition to our quality music scene at the mo. Go speechy!!

Carnival and Jay Z...again!

If you hadn't noticed, last weekend was August Bank Holiday and therefore the return of The Notting Hill Carnival. An immensely popular festival of delicious Caribbean food and music in amongst some of the nicest streets in our dirty old town.

Last time I was glued to the Rampage sound system with its heavy bass lines and most lively crowd. But this time I thought I'd chill out a bit and venture to pastures new. So we dabbled in various different dancing groups and hit the Jerk chicken BIG time. I was given a particularly juicy leg by the nice man with the toothy grin.

It was a fleeting visit, but in the usual fashion I got massively lost and crushed on my way out to find the tube station. During this weekend I also broke my bed from jumping on it, and my Guinea Pig Bert had babies.

I also HAVE to mention my new fangled love for Jay Z's newly leaked song Empire Of State with Alicia Keys. It is most pleasing to the ear and good to hear Alicia again. Jay's album is officially out Sep 11th, and I can't bloomin wait. What a beast!

Secret Sundaze

'Secret Sundaze' is probably the worst kept 'secret' in the world. It's splashed across Time Out mag and at least 3/5 people walking around Shoreditch have been. But if it's hot and it's been pay day then there's not many places I'd rather go to top up my dose of Ibiza love. (Apart from Ibiza of course)

For those of you unfamiliar with the concept of the Secret Sunday, it's an Ibizan style day rave/gathering (whatever you want to call it) for lovers of House music. It happens about every other week in the Summer and the venue changes.

Last week the infamous party was held at Light Bar in East London and as you can tell by these pics it was a good'un.

Field Day and Forgotten Camera

Last Saturday was Field Day, an awesome happening in Victoria Park, East London. Was a bit of a cracker. A WHOLE host of undeniably cool people including little boots, the xx, rusko, drums of death, mystery jets, and santigold. yes that was SANTIGOLD. Amaze!!

It was cool, very cool. BUT.....it rained. lots and lots. There was mud and grumpiness, but also a lot of togetherness due to the soggyness underfoot. I queued for a burger in the rain - yes, that's how much i love burgers, i even missed erol alkan for it (that's dedication to beef for you.)

Forgotton Camera, no it's not a new band. I have actually forgotten my camera. I left it at home home in the shire of shrop. That's why there haven't been many photo's up recently (apart from a really shit one of jay z) It's because I used it at my mum's party and left it on the book case. stupid book case!! typical. Will get it asap and i'll put some beauties up here soon as poss.

I'm sat in my little room listening to the giant that is Jay Z on Radio 1 - this is a rare moment! The man is incredible - when you look back at all his records you realise just how many bangers he's had.

I can't wait for the Blueprint 3, I bet it's off the chain!

Filthy Dukes @ Hoxton Bar and Kitchen

Wooop! I've just returned from a massively epic gig - Filthy Dukes. They were on fire!

The dark little back room at Hoxton Bar and Kitchen was rammed to the brim with hundreds of people clapping along to the dramatic beats under the numerous strobe lights. The three of them looked really intense and powerful up there and were fully into it - like they were under some kind of magical electro-rock-fuelled spell.

When they played Tupac Robot Club Rock it was unbelievable and they made sure they made sure they mixed it up a bit for their live show.

Flippin' crackin' it was. That's why I love music.

PS - My computer is RIDIC slow tonight, trying to upload these pictures of Filthy Dukes. I feel like throwing it merrily out of the window.
